Our Staff

Miss Marshall and Miss Smith are the teaching staff in the nursery.  Mrs Law and Mrs Lander are the teaching assistants who also help us to learn.

Our Routine

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am.
Afternoon sessions run from 12.15pm to 3.15pm.
Parents/carers are invited to join in with their children at nursery for the first 15 minutes of each session so come along and play!

The children have free access to the provision both indoors and outdoors as soon as they arrive at Nursery.  We also have a short group time at the end of each session.

What we learn in Nursery

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.

Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first as these are most essential for healthy development and future learning.  These are Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.

How we learn in Nursery

At Nursery, we will be learning by playing and exploring, being active and through creative and critical thinking both indoors and outside.  We follow a child initiated approach where children can choose and initiate their own learning activities and we identify 'teachable' moments to support and guide them to extend these learning opportunities.  The cycle of observation, assessment, planning, teaching is carried out on a moment-by-moment basis.  Throughout the year we assess and review the progress of all the children.  We introduce teaching of specific skills as and when appropriate to individual children and groups of children.

We have focus children each week at nursery and we record and follow their learning in detail throughout this week.  Activities that occur are recorded when the cycle is complete and these records are on the learning journeys for the focus children.  We record other observations in individual pupils' files.

We work in this way because
"Babies and young children, however, are experiencing and learning in the here and now, not storing up their questions until tomorrow or next week. It is in that moment of curiosity, puzzlement, effort or interest - the 'teachable moment' - that the skilful adult makes a difference. By using this cycle on a moment-by-moment basis, the adult will be always alert to individual children (observation), always thinking about what it tells us about the child's thinking (assessment), and always ready to respond by using appropriate strategies at the right moment to support children's well-being and learning (planning for the next moment)."

The Role of the Adult

The adults are there to facilitate learning.  They do this through observations and interactions.  We spend time getting to know the children well and we use this to enhance and extend the learning at the appropriate level for each child.

Outdoor Provision

 We will be offering children access to the outdoor learning area in all weathers so please make sure your child has appropriate clothing for the weather. They can keep wellies on their welly peg and spare clothing in a named bag.

Additional information

* Clothing - Please make sure clothing is named clearly to help the children look after their own things.
* Library - we operate an open library so please feel free to take and return a library book as often as you like.  Please just note down the book and cross it off when you return it.
* Bedtime Bags - we have a range of bedtime bags that you can loan out from school.  Simply write down the number of the bag you are borrowing and return it when you are finished.
* Show and Share - Children will be invited to bring something for show and share when it is their 'focus' week - parents will  be informed of this.
* Water bottles - Please send children a named water bottle into school.

How you can help your child

* Talk to your child as much as possible which could include talking about what they have been doing and learning about at nursery,
* Encourage your child to count different items and objects.
* Support your child to begin to create marks leading to writing for example writing lists, writing notes, drawing pictures etc.
* Share books together at home for example at bedtime or during a cosy, relaxed time at home - you can use the school library to choose a book with your child.
* Sing different songs together e.g. nursery rhymes or counting songs.
