WELCOME TO Y2 ...... WE ARE THE 'ALIENS IN UNDERPANTS' CLASS!
We are taught by Mrs Godfrey, Mrs Cupit and Mrs Skinner.
Our topic for the first half term is 'What Is Wonderful About Where We Live?' We will be learning about all the things that make where we live so special including different landmarks. We will be improving our geography skills by using maps and diagrams. We will be looking at the United Kingdom and the countries that are included. We will be going on visits in the local area and learning about the animals and plants that live there. We will be visiting Chesterfield for our trip and plan to do some very exciting activities in Chesterfield, including going up the Crooked Spire Church (St. Mary's and All Saints). This is a great chance for us to become excited about Holmgate, Clay Cross and Chesterfield. This links in very nicely to the Art project that we will be taking part in as a school to commemorate George Kenning.
In the second half term, we will be learning all about magicians and magic. We will be carrying out lots of science experiments and learning about different changes.
Our Topic Afternoon for Summer 1 will be on Wednesday 24th May at 2:30pm. We are inviting all parents/carers to come and see our topic work and learning.
This term we will be focusing on consolidating the work we have done so far on place value, addition, subtraction and multiplication. We will aim to become as fluent as possible in the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. The main focus of the term will be division.
As always our Literacy lessons will be linked to the work we do in our topic lessons. We will be exploring writing for different purposes eg letters, stories, instructions. We will be looking at the features of a recount and will write a recount of our trip to Chesterfield. We will be creating our own better versions of some well-known traditional tales and we will be continuing to work on improving our sentences by including expanded noun phrases and conjunctions. Please help us become confident writers by asking us what we have been learning and practise sentence writing with us daily.
This term we will be continuing to practise all of our skills on how to use the netbooks and iPads. We will be researching facts about the different landmarks in Chesterfield. As always, we will be ensuring that we always know how to stay safe online.
OUR SCHOOL TRIP
Our school trip on Monday 22nd May into Chesterfield will be a very exciting one. The visit will support our topic work on 'What is Wonderful About Where We Live?' We will be using the trip to enhance our learning about our local area and the special landmarks that are unique to Chesterfield. The children will have the opportunity to learn all about Chesterfield as a historic market town in the Urban Centre classroom (in the library) as well as taking part in a guided tour around Chesterfield including visiting the Tourist Information Centre, a visit in and up the Crooked Spire and a sensory exploration of the market place. Throughout the day the children will explore the features and functions of places in Chesterfield using lots of different geographical skills such as maps, sketching and observations. We can't wait!
Another busy term in Year 2 with lots of exciting learning planned!
