Welcome to YEAR 3 - We are the HORRID HENRY CLASS!

Our Class Teachers are Mrs Thomas & Mr Moore

We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning, and to help us achieve this we will be focusing on helping the children develop the three Rs.

These are:

* Respect
* Responsibility

* Resilience

We feel that if the children leave Holmgate with these qualities, they will be well-equipped in life. These skills will underpin much of what we do in class and around school.  Your child will be able to tell you exactly how these qualities apply to their daily lives in school - please ask them!

Our topic for the first half term is 'Why is chocolate so tasty?' a topic that we've all been very excited about out! Our topic starts off with a visit to Cadbury World and the opportunity to eat lots of chocolate! We will learn all about how the chocolate starts off from a bean and becomes a bar. We will then focus our learning on DT and food and make our own tasty chocolate bars! We will then use DT skills to plan and make our own packaging. Look out for them!

   Our last topic of the year will see us explore England and find out what makes it such a great place to live in. We will look closely at the wildlife of England and take our learning further by exploring the plants and countryside. We will grow our own plants and then write instructions to explain how we grew them. Our main topic focus will be art and we plan on walking around our local area to capture its beauty.

We will continue our mastery maths approach to our learning. This term we will continue to learn about multiplication and division before we move on to learning about length, mass and volume.  We will also focus on developing skills we need to solve word problems.

As ever our Literacy will link with our topic work. We will start by writing adventure stories and move onto writing poems. We will then write instructions for growing plants and finally we will finish with narrative and focus on 'The Secret Garden'.

In our science lessons we will be investigating different states of matter and the tiny particles that make up all things, before exploring light and shade in our Shadows topic.

This term we will be exploring what makes certain places important to specific groups of people, and we will visit different places of worship to find out more about what makes them special.  We will also learn more about the Jewish faith as we investigate the question: what is Judaism?

We usually have PE on Wednesdays, and we all need the right kit to wear. The best thing would be to bring a kit in at the start of term and leave it in school until the end when we will send it home to be washed. Please also make sure that any earrings are removed or removable on these days or your child will be unable to take part in their PE lesson.

On a Friday we will be sending out homework to be completed by the following Thursday, and spellings to learn for the following Friday. From next half term we will also be sending home weekly maths work on My Maths, time tables to learn and a literacy task once a fortnight.  We will be busy!

       VISITS & OUTINGS

   We have already visited some amazing places this year.  We've been to The Deep, Cadbury World and the Ancient Greeks paid us a visit. We still have one more trip planned:

Summer 2 - Trip to a local stately home to help us explore 'What makes England a great place to live?'

We hope that these trips will really help to bring the children's learning to life and will be something they will remember for a long time to come.

We look forward to an exciting and fulfilling year as Horrid Henrys!
